At Surrey Hills Day Care Centre our 4 year old Kindergarten program runs Monday to Friday within the long day care setting.

Our play based curriculum is significantly influenced by Vygotsky’s Socio-cultural Theory. Vygotsky’s theories stress the fundamental role of social interaction in the development of cognition (Vygotsky, 1978), as he believed strongly that community plays a central role in the process of “making meaning.”

The children’s everyday lived experiences form the basis of the daily program which includes placing strong value on the children’s voice and contributions together with family aspirations. There are ongoing discussions with the children as we find out their current interests, achievements and the resources we need to include to further extend their learning. Cognitive development stems from social interactions from guided learning, as children and their peers co-construct knowledge. This approach creates a stimulating room environment and motivates the children to actively participate while at Kindergarten, making their learning more meaningful while their strengths and interests are further extended.
